Companies Dumping Mining Waste at Sea Will Find Little Financing

Citigroup will no longer offer financing for new projects over $50 million to companies that dump mining waste at sea after pressure from a coalition of environmental NGOs called for an end to the practice, Mongabay reports. Mining tailings are toxic to the marine environment. The NGO Earthworks created a list of mines that dump waste into water, finding that the total annual dumping of mine tailings in oceans, lakes and rivers is more than 220 million tons, enough to fill 55 football fields.
