90 Percent of Heat Gained On Earth Absorbed by Ocean

A study conducted at University of Oxford shows that more than 90% of the increased heat on the planet between 1971 and 2010 has been absorbed by the ocean.

The study reconstructs ocean temperature change from 1871 to 2017 and combines time series of ocean surface temperatures and other ocean processes that are time-dependent. It shows the relationship between heat absorption and changes in ocean transport.

The article, “Global reconstruction of historical ocean heat storage and transport,” published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is available to read online.
