Study Examines how Dumped Munitions Move Underwater

University of Delaware researchers are studying how unexploded ordnance and munitions that were dumped in the oceans move underwater in order to better locate them for removal. They are using AUVs, sensors and positioning systems to study how fabricated surrogate munitions that they planted at a test site in Delaware Bay move over time depending on sediment, currents and storms.

Office of Naval Research Honors 2019 Young Investigators

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) recognized 25 awardees of the 2019 Young Investigator Program (YIP). The recipients will share $16.5 million in funding to conduct naval-relevant scientific research with direct benefits for sailors and marines. The ONR YIP is a highly competitive program in which academic achievements and potential for scientific breakthroughs are major factors in the evaluation process.

$9.6 Billion Authorized for Defense Spending on Unmanned Vehicle Systems

President Trump has signed into law H.R. 5515, the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019, authorizing the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to spend $9.6 billion for unmanned vehicle systems. The bill increases military spending for unmanned technologies by 28 percent over last year, according to an analysis by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems

U.S. Navy Pacific Command Renamed to Indo-Pacific Command

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis announced Wednesday the renaming of the U.S. Pacific Command, which will now be called U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. The announcement was part of a change-of-command ceremony at Pearl Harbor in which the new U.S. Indo-Pacific Commander, Admiral Phil Davidson, took command.
