Chesapeake Technology, the company that makes SonarWiz data collection and post-processing software, has renewed its multi-year partnership with the BentProp Project, which has used SonarWiz software since Dec. 2010 to create and review sonar images to identify high-likelihood search targets such as planes on the seafloor. Hundreds of images are scanned each day during a typical one-month project.

Since 2014, BentProp has been working in partnership as a founding member of Project Recover. This summer, Project Recover located the B-24 called Heaven Can Wait in Hansa Bay near Papua New Guinea. The B-24 was on a bombing mission when the plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire. Project Recover used scanning sonars, high-definition imagers and unmanned aerial and underwater robotics to find the site. After scanning 27 km in 11 days, they located the aircraft submerged under 213 ft. of water.

Project Recover is a partnership among researchers at the University of Delaware’s College of Earth, Ocean and Environment; Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego; and The BentProp Project.
