Solar Power System Tested on Passenger Ferry

The Blue Star Delos Renewable Energy Innovation Project is evaluating a solar power system developed by Eco Marine Power (EMP) onboard the Blue Star Delos, a modern high speed passenger and car ferry owned and operated by Greek shipping company Blue Star Ferries.

During the initial stages of the project, a marine solar power system using flexible lightweight marine grade panels was integrated with the Aquarius MAS system, which provided real-time performance monitoring of the solar power array as well as logging fuel oil consumption and emissions data.

The Blue Star Delos is currently fitted with an Aquarius MAS and marine solar power system trial and evaluation configuration that includes a KEI 3240 CPU/AGU, ILS hardware, fuel consumption monitoring and emissions calculation software, MPPT charge controllers, a marine battery pack and marine-grade solar panels.

Eco Marine Power Founder and CTO Gregory Mark Atkinson analyzed the data from the trial run of the system and published his findings in the Journal of Marine Engineering & Technology. The full text of the paper is available online.
