In the run-up to World Hydrography Day (WHD) 2019, the International Federation of Hydrographic Societies (IFHS) announced the winners of its Student Award for 2018 and 2019. Newly appointed Chairman Eric Langlois presented Hamza Mazih and Christopher Haddon with £1,500 prizes and commemorative certificates at an evening ceremony in Marseille, France, in June.

Mazih, who was nominated by the Francophone Hydrographic Society (AFHy), won the 2018 award for his paper “Implementation of a protocol for acquisition and processing of strapdown gravity data from
airborne inertial navigation system to compute geoid models in coastal areas.” Mazih, who graduated with an M.S. in hydrography at ENSTA Bretagne in France last autumn, is now employed by Fugro.

Haddon’s 2019 award-winning paper is “Insights into embayment-scale sediment dynamics using MBES multispectral backscatter at Perranporth, U.K.” Nominated by The Hydrographic Society U.K., he received the honor just days after completing his B.S. in ocean exploration and surveying at the University of Plymouth, U.K. He will start work with MMT.

The two award winners presented their research to an international audience attending an IFHS one-day hydrography workshop, which formed part of the Oceans 19 conference in Marseille.
