EdgeTech Sonar Utilized in
USS Indianapolis Discovery

The EdgeTech 2205 AUV-based side scan sonar system played a key role in the recent discovery of the USS Indianapolis wreckage 5,500 m deep in the Philippine Sea. The EdgeTech system is configured as a dual-frequency 75-/230-kHz side scan sonar and bathymetry, providing the ability to image more than 1,000 m from each side of the AUV. It is one of many advanced underwater technology systems on board the RV Petrel, owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen and Vulcan.


OceanGate Completes Construction of Submersible
Pressure Vessel to Explore Titanic Shipwreck

OceanGate has completed construction and assembly of the titanium and carbon-fiber-wound pressure vessel of Cyclops 2, the newest addition to its fleet of deep-sea manned submersibles, in preparation for the first human exploration of the Titanic shipwreck since 2005.

Cyclops 2 is the only privately owned submersible in the world that can take five people to depths of 4,000 m. The pressure vessel is comprised of two titanium hemispheres, two matching titanium rings, and a 56-in.-diameter, 100-in.-long carbon-fiber-wound cylinder—the largest such device ever built for use in a manned submersible.


Teledyne CARIS Releases S-100 Online Workshop
Teledyne CARIS will offer a new self-paced, online training program that examines the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) S-100 Standard and the related S-101 Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC) Production Specification.

The workshop has six parts, each containing a set of related chapters, including screen captures illustrating S-100 concepts implemented in the CARIS S-57 Composer desktop electronic chart production software, which supports creating, editing and exporting S-100 products.


Phoenix Celebrates 20th Anniversary
Phoenix International is celebrating two decades of innovation as a provider of underwater solutions, including robotics, ROVs, AUVs, wet and dry hyperbaric welding, nondestructive testing, subsea engineering, and conventional and atmospheric diving. Formed in 1997 with six underwater operations experts dedicated to the waterborne repair of U.S. Navy ships, Phoenix evolved into an international company with multiple service lines, including offshore oil and gas IRM, ship repair, engineering, submarine rescue, and deep-ocean search, survey and recovery operations.


Saab Seaeye Expands Operations into Houston
A global manufacturer of electric ROVs, Saab Seaeye is expanding its operations into Houston, Texas, citing a growing market for underwater robotics in the U.S. Gulf Coast. The Houston location focuses on technical support, spare parts for Saab Seaeye systems and service support. The company is focused on miniaturization and other technological developments to make a new generation of vehicles smaller and more powerful, with intelligent control systems. The company has distributors in 26 countries and more than 700 systems sold worldwide.


Gulf Island Shipyards Awards Contract for
Oregon State University RCRV to Gibbs & Cox

Naval architecture and marine engineering firm Gibbs & Cox Inc. received a contract from Gulf Island Shipyards to perform the functional engineering and design of the Oregon State University regional-class research vessel (RCRV). The vessel will be ABS Ice-Class C0 and DPS-1, Green-Marine Certified, acoustically quiet and carry up to 29 crew and embarked scientists. Gibbs & Cox will manage this project from their New Orleans, Louisiana, office, with support from offices in Newport News, Chesapeake and Arlington, Virginia.


Bollinger Shipyards Delivers USCGC Jacob Poroo
Bollinger Shipyards has delivered the 25th fast response cutter (FRC), USCGC Jacob Poroo, to the U.S. Coast Guard. The vessel’s commissioning is scheduled for November 8, 2017 in New Orleans. The 154-ft. patrol craft is based on the Damen Stan Patrol Boat 4708. It has a flank speed of 28 kt.; state-of-the-art command, control, communications and computer technology; and a stern launch system for the vessel’s 26-ft. cutter boat. The vessel is named after Hospital Corpsman First Class Jacob Poroo for courage during a fire at the Loran station in Adak, Alaska, in 1968.


PlanSea and ION Geophysical Collaborate
PlanSea Solutions’ logistics optimization algorithms will be integrated into ION Geophysical’s Marlin offshore operations software for improved efficiency of supply vessel logistics. The collaboration provides a visualization and communications infrastructure to gather supply vessel inventory, scheduling and task data from existing systems and workflows. Consolidating the data enables Marlin to provide comprehensive situational awareness information with supply-vessel key performance indicators (KPI) for analysis by management teams. The solution is also designed to further reduce offshore marine support costs by creating a software platform to enable supply vessel fleet sharing between companies.


TMA Selected by Port of Seattle
To Develop Marine Innovation Center

The Maritime Alliance (TMA) has been selected to help the Port of Seattle with redeveloping a building at Fishermen’s Terminal into a maritime innovation center and blue tech incubator as part of a collaborative effort with the governor’s office of the State of Washington, academic and research partners, key industry sectors and other stakeholders. TMA will serve as lead contractor to develop a feasibility study and business plan for the center.


Hydroid Delivers First New-Generation REMUS 100
Kongsberg Maritime subsidiary Hydroid Inc. successfully completed the first delivery of its new-generation REMUS 100 AUV to the Naval Oceanographic Office. The model was designed based on feedback from the REMUS 100 AUV community and includes advanced core electronics, a flexible navigation suite with an exclusive conformal DVL and an open-architecture platform for advanced autonomy.
