Teledyne Tech Demos
At Belgian MCM Trials

Teledyne participated in the Belgian Navy’s 2016 North Sea Unmanned MCM Trials by demonstrating the Gavia AUV system for mine hunting; Teledyne BlueView multibeam profiler for gap fill and target identification; a Teledyne SeaBotix ROV for target identification; and data management and visualization solutions from Teledyne Caris and Teledyne PDS. The purpose of the Belgian Navy trials was to showcase new capabilities in mine warfare and featured participation from several industry vendors. The Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation assisted in evaluating the trials in an offshore target range.


Minesniper Test Approved
For NATO Service

Kongsberg Defence Systems’ Minesniper MkIII is the latest generation of the mine countermeasure technology. Kongsberg and the Royal Norwegian Navy conducted a successful operation involving the firing of two Minesniper MkIIIs, one against a moored mine and one against a bottom-laid mine, as part of a successful sea acceptance test that has approved Minesniper MkIII for NATO service.


John Hatley Named Fellow of
Royal Institution of Naval Architects

The Royal Institution of Naval Architects has elected John Hatley, P.E., vice president, Americas, and director of market shaping, Wärtsilä Marine Solutions, as a fellow of the institution. Candidates for election as a fellow must have demonstrated exceptional contributions to the profession, a record of superior career achievements and having held positions of responsibility.


ACTUV Demo Vessel
Begins Op Testing at Sea

Leidos began operational testing of the technology demonstration vessel it is developing for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)’s Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV) program. Under test are the sensors, mission control hardware and software, and the autonomy system. The ship successfully executed a multiwaypoint mission with no person directing course or speed changes. Leidos also completed a test of the Remote Supervisory Control Station, the final test before beginning more extensive autonomous operations. Testing of the autonomy system will continue through fall 2017.


Colorado Nuclear
Attack Sub Christened

General Dynamics Electric Boat has christened Colorado (SSN-788), the U.S. Navy’s newest and most advanced nuclear attack submarine. The submarine is the 15th ship of the Virginia-class. Electric Boat and its partner, Newport News Shipbuilding, share construction of the submarine type under a teaming agreement. A total of 28 Virginia-class submarines have been delivered, are under construction or under contract.


Fugro Tech Conducts Survey of
New Zealand Earthquake Damage

Fugro’s LADS technology was deployed in New Zealand to assist in relief efforts following the recent 7.9-magnitude earthquake near Christchurch. The Royal Australian Navy Laser Airborne Depth Sounder (LADS) Flight conducted a rapid hydrographic survey of the seafloor in the coastal margins of the northeast coast of the South Island to reveal what happened below the waterline and identify any shifts in the ocean floor that mariners need to be aware of.


Contract Continues for
Arleigh Burke-Class Ships

The U.S. Navy awarded General Dynamics Bath Iron Works a $59 million contract for the continuation of Arleigh Burke-class (DDG-51) lead yard services and Flight III upgrade design efforts through December 2017. The Flight III upgrades include a more powerful missile defense radar, increased shipboard power production and hull enhancements.


Australian Minister Checks on
Progress of Future Sub Program

Australia’s Minister for Defence Industry Christopher Pyne met with DCNS in France to discuss progress on Australia’s Future Submarine Program. Twelve submarines are to be built, and a range of activities are underway, including design work and the establishment of overseas facilities in France to provide training for Australians involved in the project. Lockheed Martin Australia was selected as the preferred combat system integrator. The first of the Future Submarines is expected to be ready for operations by the early 2030s.
