FOCUS 2 ROTV for
Cable Route Survey

A MacArtney FOCUS 2 ROTV system will be applied in a cable route survey to deliver high-resolution data for route design and engineering, as well as subsea asset inspections applying the extensive sensor package.

This is part of a project to construct the world’s longest interconnector, consisting of approximately 720 km of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable to link the power grids of the U.K. and Norway. The giant interconnector, designated NSL (North Sea Link), will link their electricity transmission systems via a subsea cable that links to a converter station and an electricity substation in each country.


EdgeTech 6205 MPES for
Hydrography, Ocean Mapping

EdgeTech provided a 6205 MPES system to the University of New Hampshire’s Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping/Joint Hydrographic Center (CCOM/JHC). The EdgeTech 6205 multiphase echosounder (MPES) produces real-time, high-resolution 3D maps of the seafloor while providing co-registered simultaneous dual-frequency side scan imagery.

CCOM/JHC has a close affiliation with NOAA and will utilize the EdgeTech 6205 for research and education dedicated to missions of hydrographic science and ocean mapping.


GE Marine Tech for Deepwater
Dive Support Vessel

GE’s Marine Solutions has been chosen by Shanghai Salvage Bureau (SSB) to provide a suite of marine technologies including power and propulsion equipment, dynamic positioning (DP) and automation and control systems to its newest deepwater dive support vessel (DSV). The vessel will become the world’s first deepwater DSV with a multisaturation diving system. It will enable diving operations at depths of up to 500 m and salvage work at 6,000 m.

The vessel will feature GE’s SeaStream DP system (Class 3) and will be powered by an electric power and propulsion system, including GE’s 4,656-kW generators, switchboards and medium-voltage frequency drive propulsion controllers, as well as a vessel automation and control system.


Cybersecurity Guidelines
Updated for Ships

The second edition of The Guidelines on Cyber Security Onboard Ships has been released at http://bit.ly/2tmwGZ3. It includes information on insurance issues and how to effectively segregate networks, as well as new practical advice on managing the ship-to-shore interface and how to handle cybersecurity during port calls and when communicating with the shore side.

The guidelines are aligned with the recommendations given in the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Guidelines on cyber risk management, which were adopted in June 2017.


Open-Water Trials to Begin
For Lithium-Sulphur Battery

Steatite has been leading a consortium to develop a lithium-sulphur battery pack that would be pressure and temperature tolerant to 6,000-m depth.

After a great deal of development work and lab testing, the two-year project is now approaching the critical open-water trials phase.

This real-world testing will demonstrate the performance and benefits of the battery pack.

In order to replicate different demands, the battery pack will be fitted into two AUVs: the Deepbots UUV and the U.K. National Oceanography Centre’s Autosub Long Range, the same type of vehicle as “Boaty McBoatface.”

The open-water trials are due to commence in August.


MATE Competition Focuses on
ROVs’ Role in Seaports

Sixty-five teams from 17 countries participated in the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center’s international underwater robotics competition. Top honors in the Explorer (advanced) class went to Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) from Hong Kong, while Watsonville Firefighters’ Seal Team 1272 from Aptos, California, captured first place in the Ranger (intermediate) class.

During the event, held in the Viking Aquatics pool at Long Beach City College in Long Beach, California, student teams competed using ROVs that they designed and brought to life.

This year’s ROV competition highlighted the role ROVs play in securing the health and safety of today’s seaports. Participants were also encouraged to think about how this technology may influence the port cities of the future. During the competition, students operated their ROVs to handle tasks such as locating containers that had fallen off a cargo ship, constructing an underwater tunnel and cleaning up contaminated sediment.


The First Digital Underwater
Communications Standard

After 70 years of the “Gertrude” analog standard, the support of NATO Allied Command Transformation (ACT) has allowed the NATO STO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) to develop JANUS, an open, digital standard.

Standards are critical enablers for interoperability, and this new standard in underwater digital communications is the first step toward the underwater version of the smartphone and the Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT).

The formal acceptance of JANUS as a standard by NATO comes at the end of a 10-year process of research, development, negotiation, campaigning, testing and refinement to achieve the alignment of key stakeholders in the user, research and industrial communities. JANUS is intended to serve both military and civilian applications internationally.


Most Cargo Ships Compliant
With SOLAS ECDIS Mandate

Almost three-quarters of cargo ships over 20,000 gross tonnage (GT) were compliant with the SOLAS-mandated ECDIS deadline of July 1, 2017, according to the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO).

A further 3,828 cargo ships over 20,000 GT have yet to make the transition to using an ENC (electronic navigational chart) service and therefore do not yet meet SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) regulations on ECDIS carriage.

The SOLAS ECDIS regulations now also cover cargo ships over 50,000 GT. Ninety percent of these larger ships are considered ECDIS ready.
