Spray LP to Develop
Petit Passage Tidal Project

Tribute Resources Inc. announced the acquisition of a 0.9-MW tidal development project located at Petit Passage in Nova Scotia, Canada. The Fundy Tidal Board of Directors has approved the transfer of the Petit Passage and Grand Passage Community Feed-in Tariffs, or COMFITs, (1 MW) to Spray Tidal Limited Partnership (Spray LP) in consideration for $500,000 of preferred units in the Spray LP. Fundy shareholders will have the option to invest up to an additional $1 million of funds into the equity of the project. The transfer of the COMFITs is subject to regulatory approval.

The Petit Passage tidal project is a contracted development stage tidal energy project located between Digby Neck and Long Island in Digby County, Nova Scotia. It will be developed and owned by the Spray LP. Tocardo tidal turbine technology will be tested at the site in late 2017 or early 2018.

The Petit Passage project has a 20-year power purchase contract with Nova Scotia Power Inc. to sell tidal power at a price of $0.65 per kilowatt hour.


JFMS Partners with OMS for
Offshore Renewable Services

James Fisher Marine Services (JFMS) has signed an exclusive cooperation agreement with Oil Management and Services GmbH (OMS) to offer significant benefits to customers in the European offshore renewables industry with the delivery of full oil life cycle services, including gearbox and hydraulic oil change, enhancing the safety and performance of offshore wind turbines.

JFMS and OMS will jointly promote James Fisher’s innovative Ship-to-Turbine (STT) oil exchange system for the direct extraction and refill of offshore wind gearbox oils directly from a conventional access vessel.

This agreement will also enable James Fisher and OMS to offer a broader range of complementary services to support asset management, including diving and ROV services, offshore equipment rental and James Fisher’s innovative condition monitoring system, Mimic, with oil analysis reporting.


New England Test Sites
For Tidal Power

The New England Marine Renewable Energy Collaborative (MRECo) is collaborating with local communities to develop tidal power test sites. Working with the town of Edgartown and several universities, they are developing a tidal power test site in the waters between Martha’s Vineyard and Muskeget Island, and another test site is being set up in the Cape Cod Canal.

The potential for tidal power is great, but the engineering and economics have a long way to go, especially in the U.S., according to MRECo. These test sites offer a cost-effective alternative to offshore testing.


Statoil Extends Offshore
Wind Involvement

Statoil and Statkraft have signed a letter of intent for Statoil to take over as operator of the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm January 2017. Statoil will also increase its share in the Dogger Bank projects.

Sheringham Shoal is among the world’s 10 largest producing offshore wind farms. Located off the coast of Norfolk, England, it has been in operation since 2012 and has a capacity of 317 MW.

Dogger Bank is the world’s largest offshore wind development, having achieved consent for an agreed target installed capacity of 4,800 MW. In total, the Dogger Bank projects have the potential to provide renewable energy to up to 5 million U.K. homes.


DOE Funds Marine,
Hydrokinetic Projects

The U.S. Energy Department (DOE) selected the recipients of more than $20 million in funding for new research, development and demonstration projects that advance and monitor marine and hydrokinetic (MHK) energy systems, which generate electricity from ocean waves and tidal currents. These projects will aim to improve the performance of MHK systems and advance environmental monitoring technologies that will help protect wildlife and reduce uncertainty regarding potential environmental impacts.

The U.S.’s technically recoverable wave energy resource ranges from 900 to 1,230 terawatt-hours (TWh) per year. The tidal streams resource ranges from 220 to 330 TWh per year. With more than 50 percent of the U.S. population living within 50 mi. of coastlines, there is vast potential to provide clean, renewable electricity to communities and cities in U.S. coastal areas.

The selected organizations are: Dresser-Rand, Ocean Renewable Power Co., Oscilla Power, BioSonics Inc., Florida Atlantic University, Integral Consulting Inc., University of Washington, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Three demonstration projects will integrate next-generation MHK hardware and software technologies into system designs. Their effectiveness will be tested during full-scale, open-water deployments over one year.


EMEC Named Blue
Economy Winner

The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) has been named Blue Economy Business of the Year at the European Commission’s Blue Economy Business Awards 2016.

EMEC is based in Orkney, Scotland, and acts as a case study for the economic benefits that can be achieved through a marine renewable energy test facility that can translate to the larger blue economy.


Redeployment of Service
Rig in North Sea

Attollo Offshore has supported Teras Offshore in the redeployment of its first service rig to work in the European offshore wind farm industry for one of the leading energy groups in northern Europe.

Aberdeen-headquartered Attollo Offshore has worked in collaboration with Teras Offshore to secure a 16-month charter contract to provide its jack-up accommodation rig to DONG Energy UK to support its Race Bank offshore wind farm construction activities in the U.K. sector of the North Sea.

Deploying an accommodation jack-up next to the offshore substation (OSS) enables safe and easy access to the wind farm and the OSS.
