Huntington Ingalls Delivers LHA-6 to US Navy
Huntington Ingalls Industriesí (Newport News, Virginia) Ingalls Shipbuilding division has delivered the amphibious assault ship America (LHA-6) to the U.S. Navy.

America completed sea trials in February, with no major deficiencies identified. Following delivery, the commissioning crew will move aboard and begin shipboard training in preparation for the shipís sail-away.

Commissioning is slated for late 2014 in San Francisco, California. America will be the flagship of an expeditionary strike group.


French DGA Successfully Fires MBDA Naval Cruise Missile
The French DGA carried out the second qualification firing of the naval cruise missile (MdCN) under development by MBDA (London, England). The firing took place at the DGAís Biscarrosse missile test center in southwest France and was representative of a firing from a frigate. It demonstrated the missileís flight capabilities at high altitude.

Towards the end of 2014, MdCN will equip the French Navyís multimission frigates and, around 2018, its Barracuda submarines.

Featuring a range of several-hundred kilometers, MdCN is intended for strikes against targets deep within enemy territory. It complements the SCALP cruise missile and is carried on frigates or submarines positioned for lengthy periods in international waters.


Successful Demo of Lockheed Martin OPTIMUS on Unmanned Helicopter
Lockheed Martin (Bethesda, Maryland) and the U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR) successfully demonstrated the Lockheed Martin OPTIMUS mission systemís ability to accomplish an autonomous approach and landing in an unprepared environment. The system enhances the onboard intelligence of the vehicle and provides an advanced mission planning capability that can be applied to current and future helicopters and rotary wing aircraft.

The Autonomous Aerial Cargo/Utility System demonstration tested OPTIMUS technology aboard a K-MAX unmanned helicopter. During the demonstration, an active duty Marine interfaced with the mission systemís handheld flight control device to complete a resupply mission. The system successfully planned, routed and executed the mission without requiring user input.

OPTIMUS primes aircraft for operations in austere environments and allows users to execute missions day and night, in all weather conditions. It adds a multilayer world model and active sensor control to enhance onboard perception and understanding for missions in which operators have limited or no knowledge of the location.


NOC, Royal Navy Partner On Marine Autonomous Systems
The U.K. National Oceanography Centre (NOC) and the Royal Navy signed a memorandum of understanding to enable cooperation on marine autonomous systems.

The Royal Navy does not have a mature glider capability, so working with the NOC will provide the basis for trialing and understanding how the gliders can best be used.

Currently the NOC has the largest marine autonomous systems fleet for science in Europe and operates the largest glider fleet in Europe, with continuous development of novel sensors and applications. The NOCís unique capabilities include the Autosub Long Range, designed for operations to 6,000 meters depth, 6,000-kilometer range and up to six months deployment.

In parallel, the NOC will continue to work with the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL), which is also funding a number of research and development projects on marine autonomous systems, including the NOCís Long Endurance Marine Unmanned Surface Vehicle project.


DRS Canada to Provide Communications Support to Royal Australian Navy
DRS Technologies Inc.ís (Arlington, Virginia) Canadian subsidiary will provide communications systems in support of the Royal Australian Navyís ANZAC-class frigates.

The subcontract was awarded to DRS Technologies Canada Ltd. (DRS TCL) in support of a communications modernization contract by Selex ES (Basildon, England).

Under the subcontract, DRS will provide internal tactical and secure voice switching systems and terminals, including the SHINCOM 3100 central switching unit, wideband audio network data switching system, console dual screen terminals, outdoor terminals, jackboxes and ancillaries.

DRS TCL will produce and deliver eight ship sets and two shore systems.
