A U.S. Navy and NOAA expedition deployed the Navy’s Deep Drone ROV, equipped with a high-resolution video camera, still cameras and a 3D imaging sonar, to examine USS Monitor, a sunken Civil War ironclad. The ROV was operated by Eastport International Inc. ... A main cause of sediment loss from the Arctic’s coast and inner shelf, and thus coastal retreat, was gouging or bulldozing by ice of the nearshore seafloor and the shore, the U.S. Geological Survey found. ... 1997. Researchers were evaluating southern flounder as an aquaculture species because the fish could mature rapidly and tolerate variations in salinity and temperature. ... A study of tidally driven ocean fronts in the Haro Strait was the first to deploy AUVs in an adaptive sampling mode, which allowed the vehicles to be reprogrammed based on computer analysis of each day’s data. It also marked the first time two AUVs were able to work together on a mission. ... Western Marine Electronics’ SHD7000S side scan sonar system helped locate a Spanish galleon that sank more than 340 years ago near the mouth of the Guayaquil River.
