Construction Complete on Final Wind Turbine For Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm
The construction of 88 Siemens AG (Munich, Germany) 3.6-megawatt turbines at the 317-megawatt Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm off the coast of North Norfolk, England, was completed in July.
The Seajacks Leviathan has worked in tandem with a second jack-up vessel, GMS Endeavour, for the past five months to complete the erection of the turbines.
With 88 turbines in place and 46 turbines now connected and able to deliver electricity to the national grid, the wind farm is on track to be fully operational in September. The wind farm has been generating electricity since August 2011.
The remaining turbines are in various stages of mechanical and electrical completion, commissioning or testing before they can start generation.
Work will continue on the cable burial before full hand over to operator Scira Offshore Energy Ltd. (Norfolk, England). Statoil (Stavanger, Norway) and Statkraft (Oslo, Norway) own the wind farm via the joint venture company Scira, and Statoil has been the construction project manager.
Work on the termination of all the infield cables is now complete, and they are ready to transmit power once each turbine becomes operational.
The placement of scour protection around the foundation bases is in the final stages.
Thales UK, ASV to Develop USV for MCM
Thales UK (Bristol, England) has signed a contract with Autonomous Surface Vehicles Ltd. (Portchester, England), or ASV, to develop a reconfigurable USV for offboard mine countermeasures (MCM) operations, Thales announced in July.
The low-signature USV will be deployable from military platforms, craft of opportunity and from shore, and will be air transportable. It will have the payload flexibility for UUVs and towed sonar, disposal and minesweeping systems.
The USV will be 11.5 meters long and 3.6 meters in beam, and will have a maximum speed of about 25 knots. The vessel is now under construction and will be undergoing acceptance trials later this year. A series of payload trials will be conducted starting early 2013.
DeepOcean Awarded Precut Trenching Contract For Skagerrak Submarine Interconnector
DeepOcean UK Ltd. (Darlington, England) announced in June a precut trenching contract award with Statnett SF (Oslo, Norway) and Energinet.dk (Fredericia, Denmark) on the Skagerrak 4 High-Voltage DC Submarine Interconnector Project.
DeepOcean will provide the engineering and project management for the precut trenching in Denmark, which was expected to start in July. The scope of work will include mobilization out of DeepOceanís offshore base in Middlesbrough, England, pretrench survey and precut trenching of 23 kilometers of the Skagerrak 4 route.
DeepOcean will also provide its precut trenching Advanced Pipeline Plough, to be operated off the high bollard pull TSV Maersk Assister, which was to arrive at DeepOceanís offshore base in July.
Fugro Salt Subsea Takes First Q1400 Delivery
Fugro Salt Subsea (Aberdeen, Scotland) took delivery of the first of two Q1400 trenching systems from manufacturer Soil Machine Dynamics Ltd. (Wallsend, England), or SMD, in June. The second system is due for delivery in September after offshore acceptance trials that will test the systemís jetting and chain-cutting modes.
The Q1400 will commence its first contract on the Lincs offshore wind farm off Englandís Lincolnshire coast.
The trenching system has a common trenching control module and separate tracked jetting and chain-cutting skids, with a customized launch and recovery system rated to sea state 6. A deck transfer skidding system enables mode changes at sea safely within a four-hour period.
The Q1400 can be used in the oil and gas, renewable and power generation markets.
SAILOR 900, 500 Communication Systems Delivery Complete for HANSA Fleet
In partnership with Pro Nautas B.V. GmbH (Leer, Germany) and Vizada (Rockville, Maryland), Thrane & Thrane A/S (Lyngby, Denmark) has completed delivery of its SAILOR 900 VSAT and SAILOR 500 FleetBroadband systems to HANSA Heavy Lift GmbHís (Hamburg, Germany) fleet of 21 multipurpose heavy-lift vessels.
Installation and commissioning was expected to be completed on all vessels in July. Based on the Vizada XChange platform, the SAILOR 900 VSAT and SAILOR 500 FleetBroadband provide automatic selection of Ku-band or L-band based on coverage, system performance and available airtime rates.
World Speed Record Set for Human-Powered Subs
A human-powered submarine world speed record was achieved in June at the inaugural European International Submarine Races when École de Technologie Supérieure, Montréal, Québecís submarine Omer 8 travelled at 7.03 knots over a 13-meter section of the course. Omer 8 also won the overall award for design, manufacture and race performance.
During a race, the one-man subs, designed and built by competing students at their universities, are flooded, with the pilot providing the power by pedaling in scuba gear.
The races were held at QinetiQís (Farnborough, England) ocean basin test tank at Gosport, England.
Hallin Marine, Romona Sign Alliance Agreement
Hallin Marine (Singapore) signed in May a long-term strategic alliance agreement with Romona Inc. (Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Russia) for offshore energy projects throughout Russia.
The target markets will be Russiaís east coast, the Russian sectors of the Caspian and Black Sea, the Arctic, including the Barents and Kara seas, and the Baltic.
ATR Group Acquires UES
ATR Group (Aberdeen, Scotland) has completed its acquisition of Underwater Engineering Services (Foveran, Scotland), or UES, ATR announced in July.
UES provides diver- and ROV-operated tooling, as well as fully integrated packages, comprising deck cranes, winches, power packs, survey and deployment equipment. ATR sees UESís subsea rental offering and engineering capabilities as complementary to its own services.
Jeff Riddoch, managing director of UES, will continue to lead the business along with his current team.
Subsea Vision Buys Saab Seaeye ROV
Subsea Vision (Corfe Mullen, England) has taken delivery of a Cougar XT Compact ROV, manufacturer Saab Seaeye (Fareham, England) said in June. Subsea Vision will be able to use the ROV to service FPSOs in the North Sea. The ROV will enable work for longer periods in strong tidal areas and allow Subsea Vision to offer larger tooling packages, such as pipe-tracking systems, and manipulator and hydraulic skids for light-class work operations.
Subsea Visionís Cougar XT Compact comes with dual fiber optics and a dedicated fiber-optic link for client-specific tooling. Saab Seaeye engineers created the compact version of the ROV by reducing the frame size, buoyancy and weight for a design with the highest thrust-to-weight ratio in its class, the company said.
OSIL Installs Two Buoys in Mediterranean
OSIL (Havant, England) announced in June that it has installed two dredge monitoring buoys in the Mediterranean for EDT Offshore (Yermasoyia, Cyprus).
OSIL also supplied its High Power Vibrocorer system for use in dense or compact sediments in up to 600 meters water depth.
OSILís Shearwater Buoy is designed to measure and collect oceanographic, meteorological and water-quality data parameters at inshore coastal areas, harbors and estuaries. It can be used as a permanent or temporary platform.
The High Power Vibrocorer retrieves continuous, undisturbed core samples from unconsolidated and semiconsolidated sediments. It can collect cores 100 millimeters in diameter and up to 9 meters in length in dense or compact sediments.
Scanunit Named GUARDIAN BWT Exclusive Sales Agent in Sweden
Hyde Marine Inc. (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) named in July Scanunit Ab (Helsingborg, Sweden) as the exclusive sales agent in Sweden for Hyde GUARDIAN ballast water treatment (BWT) systems.
The chemical-free GUARDIAN BWT system uses filtration and ultraviolet disinfection to treat shipsí ballast water. The system is International Maritime Organization type approved.
Smit Lamnalco Receives Support, Towage Contract
Smit Lamnalco (Sharjah, United Arab Emirates) received in June a 10-year, $120 million marine support and towage contract covering LNG export terminal operations in Papua New Guinea, led by Exxon Mobil Corp. (Irving, Texas). The project is expected to produce more than 9 trillion cubic feet of gas for export.
The contract will provide tugboats and crews to assist berthing and unberthing of LNG carriers. The agreement also specifies deployment of four newbuild RAstar 3200-class, 65-tonne bollard pull azimuth stern drive tugs to provide escort and LNG terminal towage services.
ARA Deploys Sonardyne USBL System in Port Survey
ARA Inc. (Sykesville, Maryland) has completed a subsurface survey of Terminal 91 in the Port of Seattle, in which it deployed its ROV ROUMRS and Sonardyne International Ltd.ís (Yateley, England) Scout USBL acoustic positioning system, Sonardyne said in July.
ARAís operation was to identify and clear any magnetic anomalies that could potentially warrant further investigation. The survey was completed in March. ARA mobilized its ROV ROUMRS, which was fitted with a Sonardyne WSM 6 transponder. A Scout transceiver was deployed from the side of the dock on a pole. Positioning data from Scout was fed to Sonardyne ViewPoint navigation software.
Proteus Completes Red Sea Satellite-Based Bathymetric Mapping Project in 10 Days
Proteus (Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates) has completed a 200-square-kilometer bathymetric mapping project along the Red Sea coastline in 10 days, deriving the bathymetric data from DigitalGlobe (Arlington, Virginia) WorldView-2 high-resolution, eight-band satellite imagery.
The project could have taken six to eight months if the data had been collected by boat due to required government permits and shallow-water navigation obstacles, Proteus said.
The satellite bathymetry process extracted seafloor elevation measurements to depths of 20 meters with a 4-meter point density at distances up to 5 kilometers off the Saudi Arabian Coast. The bathymetric data supported an environmental assessment by Sogreah (Lyon, France) in preparation for construction of a power plant south of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
