1996. Under the Clean Water Act, EPA required coastal oil and gas production facilities to stop pollutant discharges into the Gulf of Mexico and reduce discharges into Cook Inlet, Alaska. The areas were the last two remaining U.S. coastal areas receiving such discharges. ... Petrosurveys Inc. completed tests of an instrument that remotely and autonomously measured the vertical profiles of electrical potential in deep-sea sediments. The system relied on the presence and activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria. ... A National Science Foundation-funded study fertilized a patch of ocean waters with iron.
