ST Conference Preview—February 2010

Oceanology International 2010

Oceanology International 2010 will be held at the ExCeL center in London, England, from March 9 through 11. The biennial event will feature the core technical disciplines of navigation and positioning, hydrography and geophysics, the marine environment, geotechnics, and ocean observation and forecasting, the organizers said.

The conference, developed by the Society for Underwater Technology, is the result of a rigorous selection process resulting in conference sessions featuring positive technology outcomes, case studies and presentations on achieved returns on investment and performance improvements, the organizers continued.

“All the presentations, designed to meet the needs of the marine science and ocean technology community and the sectors they serve, such as the offshore oil and gas, marine renewable energy and homeland security industries, are peer-reviewed and will be published through distinguished journals,” said James Coleman, exhibition manager of Oceanology International.

Conference Organizers and Topics
Dr. D. James Baker, director of the William J. Clinton Foundation’s Global Carbon Measurement Program, is the chairman of the conference. He is also a science and management consultant with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics and the Environment.

Each technical stream has its own dedicated committee responsible for the structure of its sessions, the organizers said. Rob Balloch, strategic development and marketing director of Sonardyne (Yateley, England), chairs the navigation and positioning committee; Andy W. Hill, marine geohazards technical authority of BP America (Warrenville, Illinois), chairs the hydrography and geophysics committee; Paul Holthus, executive director of the World Ocean Council, chairs the marine environment committee; Pat Power, managing director of Fugro GeoConsulting (Wallingford, England), chairs the geotechnics committee; and Ralph Rayner, vice president of The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) and chairman of the Global Ocean Observing System Scientific and Technical Committee, chairs the ocean observing and forecasting committee.

“We are confident that those attending will agree that this is a milestone conference program designed to complement the largest ever Oceanology International exhibition, featuring more than 500 suppliers of products and services from around the world,” said Coleman.

“Our exhibitors are constantly feeding through information on what they are launching and featuring on their booths, and this regularly updated information can be found on our Web site, enabling visitors to plan their visit to the show in advance, ensuring they get the most out of the three packed days they will be spending in London. In 2008, the event was attended by over 6,600 people from nearly 90 different countries.

Role in the Ocean Community
For more than 40 years, Oceanology International has played a key role in serving the marine science and ocean technology community, conference organizers said. Events held alongside the main exhibition and conference demonstrate its importance and the central role it plays within the community, they continued.

This year’s event is no exception: The two-day UKSPILL10 Marine Oil Spill Seminar, organized by the U.K. Spill Association (UKSPILL), is just one of several events to be colocated with Oceanology International, according to the organizers. The association represents companies, organizations and individuals working in the oil spill industry in the U.K. and is recognized by the U.K. Environmental and Maritime Regulators as the national industry body for the commercial and related interests of the industry, conference organizers continued. UKSPILL10 will take place on March 9 and 10 at ExCeL.

“This is not the only event to be colocated with Oceanology International, far from it,” Coleman said. “Indeed, this year’s show will host the meetings of the Global Ocean Observing System Scientific Steering Committee, the Panel for Integrated Coastal Observations and the Intergovernmental Global Ocean Observing System Executive Board.

“The organizers of these important international meetings have taken the decision to meet at Oceanology International in order to be alongside the many providers and users of ocean observations that will be participating in this spring’s show.

”We are also extremely honored to be an officially badged supporter of the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, being celebrated in 2010,” he added.

Other ocean industry players who will be hosting events alongside the conference include the Hydrographic Society, which will be staging its U.K. annual general meeting; IMarEST; and the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA), which will host its remotely operated vehicle seminar and its European & Africa Section meeting on March 10, as well as playing a key role in Careers Day on March 11, conference organizers said.

“The Oceanology International Careers Day is an important adjunct to the show—the industry is in constant need of new and talented recruits,” said Coleman. “With support from IMCA and IMarEST, university students are bused to and hosted at the show and able to meet exhibitors on their booths who have HR [human resources] experts and young professionals there to meet them.”

Vessel Demonstrations
Once again, Oceanology International will host visits by a number of vessels. These include HMS Cattistock, a British Royal Navy mine hunter used for route surveys and fishery protection; the Freedom, a brand new survey vessel designed for hydrographic survey work in coastal waters and built by No Limit Ships (Groningen, Netherlands); MV FlatHolm, a U.K.-flagged multidiscipline coastal survey and research vessel available for geotechnical, geophysical and hydrographic surveys of U.K. waters; the Celtic Voyager, a multipurpose research vessel owned by the Marine Institute of Ireland; Seabeam, on which survey systems, such as multibeam echo sounders and sidescan sonar, will be demonstrated; Yantlet, which will undertake demonstration runs featuring RESON (Slangerup, Denmark) multibeam echo sounders and associated software; and Wessex Explorer, a survey vessel using Systems Engineering & Assessment Ltd.’s (Beckington, England) SWATHplus sonar and CodaOctopus (New York, New York) equipment.

“Seeing really is believing,” Coleman said. “Being able to see equipment in situ means a great deal to our visitors, and the vessels are an important addition to the show. They also prove popular spots for networking—again a vital element of Oceanology International, which is encouraged throughout the event.”

Information on Oceanology International 2010, including free online registration, podcasts by conference stream committee chairmen, the conference program, exhibitors and their exhibits, vessels, and side events, is available online at www.oceanologyinternational.com.
